As I’ve been posting here over the past couple of weeks, I have been reminded of why all previous iterations of my SCA web presence have spluttered.  I just can’t decide how I want to organize things.  Because the “completed projects” and “current projects” schema doesn’t work – some things are too small to be worth a whole webpage of their own, etc.

So look for a reorganization around here sometime in the relatively near future.

I cut out Shoshanna’s red tunic a couple of days ago; I had miscalculated the amount of fabric I was going to need, in part because I’m making this tunic HUGE on her. I ended up cutting the body panels, gussets, and one (split) gore from the back body panel of the cyclas, the second gore from one of the gores, and the sleeves from part of the front panel.  That left me most of the front panel and the second gore… not enough to make her a second toddler-tunic out of, but enough to make a pair of shot hosen from.  And, as my lovely Laurel once told me, every girl needs red stockings.

I finally got some pictures of Shoshanna’s brown checked tunic, too. Again, I don’t have any that I can post of her IN it (the ones I have were not taken by us and I don’t have permission to web them). But with her in it you can’t see the interesting bits, anyway.

The whole thing. Just a normal tunic – it matches my brown checked one, right down to the reverse facing. (Mine has guards on the cuffs, though.)

The big thing about this is that I had to let it out recently – I had underestimated the kid’s rate of growth.

Detail of how I let it out – I added a 1″ strip along each side of the body panels and put in REALLY big gussets – almost as big as I put in my tunics. Those two things combined should be enough to let it fit her in the body for quite a while longer.

Here, you can see that I had to piece the strips – I was really scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as having enough fabric to do this alteration. But you REALLY can’t see it when she’s wearing it, AND we all know that piecing is period, while wasting fabric matching patterns is not.  It’s already a bit too short on her, but we’ll just have to live with that – she wears it over an undertunic anyway.

I don’t know when I’m going to get a chance to get Matatias all suited up so I can take pictures of him IN the garment, so I went ahead and popped it on the dress form so I could get a sense of how it looked on a body. He’s tried it on, so I can tell you that it actually looks MUCH BETTER on a live human than on the form, even moreso than other things, I think. Pictures and thoughts after the jump… I’m going to wait to finish up the static page about it until I’ve got pictures of it on M. Continue Reading »
